Bioethics and prenatal diagnosis of foetal diseases.

چکیده
The development of prenatal tests to detect structural and chromosomal abnormalities in single and multiple foetuses started some 30 years ago. The use of amniocentesis and analysis of amniotic fluid allowed obstetricians to detect and assess the severity of rhesus disease in the unborn child and decide on the need for early delivery. Today, numerous prenatal testing techniques, including maternal blood sampling, ultrasound, chorionic villi biopsy, and amniocentesis are used to detect a variety of medical conditions in the foetus. The use of molecular diagnosis and other sophisticated techniques allows obstetricians to diagnose many genetic conditions accurately before the baby is born.

Current Principles and Practice of Ethics and Law in Perinatal Medicine
One of the most controversial discussion topics in modern bioethics, science or philosophy is represented by the beginning of the individual human life. It is ethically, medically and scientifically correct that the human conception product to be born, so to gain personality and individuality, to be treated as a patient since the intrauterine life. Intrauterine foetal interventions, performed i...
متن کاملPrenatal Diagnosis and Foetal Therapy
Introduction Prenatal diagnosis and foetal therapy are rare in Africa except for the presentation of polyhydraminios in foetal bowel obstruction. This chapter therefore covers prenatal diagnosis and therapy as practised in resourced countries. Expertise in surgical correction of congenital malformations may favourably influence the perinatal management of prenatally diagnosed anomalies, by chan...
متن کاملNon-invasive prenatal diagnosis by massively parallel sequencing of maternal plasma DNA
The presence of foetal DNA in the plasma of pregnant women has opened up new possibilities for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. The use of circulating foetal DNA for the non-invasive prenatal detection of foetal chromosomal aneuploidies is challenging as foetal DNA represents a minor fraction of maternal plasma DNA. In 2007, it was shown that single molecule counting methods would allow the det...
متن کاملEvolution of foetal echocardiography as a screening tool for prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
Congenital cardiac anomalies are the most common anomalies, with an estimated incidence of about 4-13 per 1000 live births. Proper perinatal and neonatal management is dependent upon accurate prenatal diagnosis. Approximately 10% of foetuses with cardiac abnormalities have identified risk factors; hence, most of the anomalies occur in pregnancies without prenatal risk factors. Foetal echocardio...
